Sun previews J2EE 1.4

Licensees get preliminary release

Sun Microsystems on Thursday announced availability of a preliminary, "qualification" release of Java 2 Platform Enterprise Edition (J2EE) 1.4 source code for J2EE licensees.

The source code provides support for the Web Services Interoperability Organization (WS-I) Basic Profile for building interoperable Web services. Sun had held up the release of J2EE 1.4 pending availability of the Basic Profile, which was finalized in August.

Additionally, the source code includes the J2EE programming model for portable Web services applications and also includes compatability tests allowing J2EE licensees to make progress on implementing J2EE 1.4, according to Sun.

A final version of J2EE 1.4 is due later this year. Once J2EE 1.4 is finalized, Sun will release compatability tests, source code and a software development toolkit.
