Germany's SAP AG, the world's largest provider of business management software, plans to open a new software development lab in Budapest in the first half of this year.
SAP will initially employ 50 software engineers in the Hungarian lab, and plans to add up to 300 by the end of next year, said SAP spokesman Markus Berner on Wednesday.
"We are expanding into Hungary to take advantage of the country's solid infrastructure and pool of local expertise," Berner said.
The new lab, which will focus on SCM (supply chain management) technology, will bring SAP's network of product development centers to 10: Walldorf, Germany (the company's headquarters); Sophia Antipolis, France; Tel Aviv; Bangalore, India; Shanghai; Montreal; Tokyo; Sofia; and Palo Alto, California.
This year, SAP plans to hire 3,000 employees, of whom 1,000 will focus on developing the company's new Business Process Platform, which will be based on its NetWeaver integration technology.
The company did not break out how many of its planned new hires will work in research and development (R&D).
In 2004, SAP invested around €1 billion ($1.3 billion) in R&D.
