Microsoft will issue service packs next year for both Visual Studio 2003 and Visual Studio 2005, its package of tools for developers.
The news was posted Monday on a Web log by Microsoft employee Scott Wiltamuth, a visual C# product service manager, on Microsoft's Developer Network (MSDN) Web site. The same day, Microsoft hosted galas in places such as San Francisco and London for the launch of Visual Studio 2005, SQL Server 2005 and a new beta version of BizTalk Server 2006, a software trio designed as an XML (Extensible Markup Language) and Web services-oriented applications platform.
Service Pack 1 for Visual Studio 2003 is scheduled for release in April 2006, Wiltamuth wrote. The first service pack for Visual Studio 2005 will be released in the first half of next year after Microsoft gathers more data from customers, he wrote. A more specific release date will be released in a few months.
At least one Microsoft official acknowledged on Monday that there were concerns with the new Visual Studio 2005 release, and that the company was evaluating an issue raised with IDE (integrated development environment). Any known "issues" will be published online on the Visual Studio site on MSDN, according to an e-mail response sent on Wednesday from Waggener Edstrom, which handles press queries for Microsoft.
Microsoft has been hit from both sides on Web log sites, lashed by those who want a new version out sooner and by those who want Microsoft to take its time and deliver a bug-free release.
