Microsoft Linux drivers a welcome contribution

Microsoft wants interoperability between Hyper-V and Linux, not world domination

I always get a big kick out of Randall Kennedy's conspiracy theories. His latest, "Linux slips into Microsoft's warm, deadly embrace," is no exception.

Let's get real. Yes, Microsoft in the past had a strategy of "embrace and extend" to make Windows a "great" platform for using the Internet. It's no secret. In fact, it was a fairly successful strategy for keeping Windows relevant as the Internet, and particularly the Web, became more important.

[ Microsoft's announcement could prompt other closed source vendors to follow suit. ]

Hyper-V is one of the strengths of Windows Server 2008 R2. It's a very good way to run multiple virtual servers on a single box, and one good way to optimize the use of server hardware.

In releasing Hyper-V drivers for Linux under GPLv2, Microsoft is making it much easier, more efficient, and more palatable from a legal standpoint for its customers to run Linux under Hyper-V on Windows Server 2008 R2. That's not a deep, dark conspiracy; that's giving customers who run mixed Linux and Microsoft shops what they want. And giving your customers what they want is, in the long term, just good business.

Mid-range Storage Considerations

A common misconception is that mid-range storage requirements are dramatically different than that of a larger enterprise. Mid-range storage users may require less capacity, but they have similar functionality and management requirements. This ESG paper examines mid-range storage needs and reviews a new solution that adjusts size while retaining value, performance and functionality.

Maybe, but why would anyone run the stable system on top of the wobbly one?

If you have to run Server 2008 because the suits told you to, so be it. Nothing wrong with Hyper-V (disclosure, I prefer Linux.) in that scenario. Personally, I'd rather run the whole mess under VMWare. At least that's running the whole thing under Linux.

In addition, it gives more weight to GPLv2, rather than the "all your hard work has zero monetary value" GPLv3.
