Moscow-based security software company Kaspersky Lab on Wednesday announced plans to acquire a set of e-mail filtering software and services known as the Spamtest Project.
Developed by Russian software vendor Ashmanov & Partners, Spamtest is already used in a number of Kaspersky's antispam products.
In addition to the Spamtest e-mail filtering software, Kaspersky is also purchasing the spamtest.ru online scanning service and an online magazine by the same name, the company said in a statement. Terms of the deal were not released, but Kaspersky said it expects to complete the acquisition in about two months.
The acquisition, which is the first in Kaspersky's history, will help the company better integrate spam filtering into its antivirus and antispyware products, company Chief Executive Officer Natalya Kaspersky said in the statement.
Spamtest's filters are used to screen between 40 million and 60 million e-mail messages each day, and are used by about 30 million mailboxes, the company said.
Kaspersky Lab is a small, but well-respected player in the market for security products said Chris Christiansen, an IDC analyst Framingham. "The Russians have some excellent security technology and they have some of the most brilliant mathematicians on earth," he said, "[Kaspersky Lab is] in the process of becoming a full-fledged secure content management vendor."
With less than 1 percent of the worldwide antivirus market, IDC estimates that Kaspersky had revenue of about $20 million in 2004, Christiansen said.
