Astaro on Tuesday released an improved version of its Linux-based security package that now includes gateway-based spyware protection against malware and the ability to block and removed infected software already on a system.
Version 5.2 of Astaro Security Linux has the ability to intercept messages from spyware applications already inside an end-user organization before they can reach the Internet and the spyware author's Web site. The new technology can be activated and disabled from the product's Web Administrator's interface, according to company officials.
“We think this is the first firewall-based security products that is intended to protect clients' spyware infection attempts as well as preventing infected computers from sending personal Web usage data out over the Internet," said Jan Hichert, Astaro's CEO and co-founder.
While some existing desktop anti-spyware products can help address some of these problems, Hichert said, they can be difficult to manage and only provide partial spyware protection. But Version 5.2 can offer more complete protection from malware and adware before they can gain access to a desktop system.
Spyware and adware can significantly slow a computer's performance as well as secretly transmit information to hackers on a user's Web surfing and purchasing activities and behavior, company executives noted.
Besides being available in Version 5.2, the Spyware Protection technology is also available immediately on Astaro Security Gateway appliances, a company spokesman said. It will be available as part of the Astaro Secure Web subscription. Existing users with a Surf Protection or Astaro Secure Web subscription can get Spyware Protection free of charge with V 5.2 Up2Date, a company official said.
