By Royal appointment: the Queen joins Twitter

But no individual Tweets from the Royals

The Royal Family has joined micro-blogging site Twitter, according to Buckingham Palace officials. The Twitter.com/BritishMonarchy site went live today.

Sadly, the public won't be treated to politically incorrect rants from Prince Phillip, Prince Harry's dressing up advice or the Queen's racing tips, as the feed will be used only for regular updates on what the Royals are up to.

No member of the Royal Family will be personally 'tweeting', according to a Palace spokesperson. She said that the service will pass on information about Royal engagements.

"The intention is that it is a news service rather than a personal voice," she added.

The spokeswoman said that the Queen and the Prince of Wales had been informed about their account on Twitter, which currently features only a few links to stories on the official British Monarchy website.

Internet news and reviews

Twitter is the latest social-networking phenomena - a wildly successful micro-blogging site on which users post status updates of 140 characters or less.
