Idera's Criminal Activity

November 27, 2007
WOW, this is big. I just found an article about a lawsuit filed by Quest Software against Idera where they allege patent infringement as well as criminal hacking and property theft. The article is on Technology Law 360. Man, this is just big. Ok, according to the story, Quest is saying that Idera has not only been copying their software to the point that they're infringing their patents, but they've actually ill

The new Katmai Experience

November 26, 2007
I downloaded the new Katmai CTP today and ran an upgrade on my workstation. Unfortunately it didn't go quite as planned. In fact, I'd have to say I'm actually a little disappointed. First, many parts of the upgrade failed. I can take most of them, but the engine upgrade failed and for such a simple scenario, it really shouldn't have. I haven't looked at the log yet so I don't know why it failed, but the point is

The Penguin Mothership

November 08, 2007
This week I visited Oracle headquarters for the first time. I've been writing pieces on Oracle for about 4-5yrs now and I've finally earned enough credits to be called in. Now what can I say about Oracle campus except it's nothing short of cool. It's probably one of the nicest tech campuses I've visited. It houses a rather large pond that I'm told used to be home to a few dolphins. That aside though, the campus

Parturient montes, nascetur ridiculus mus

November 01, 2007
Ok, let's get into it again. I'm just trying to do something simple and I'm hitting roadblocks at every turn. The task is simple: Script out these databases on server1 and create the empty schemas on server2. I also want to save the scripts so I can do it again and again during my dev cycle. I want to have an identical schema so I can just test my change scripts to make sure they'll run before I put them against

Apple Boneheads!! or Zune your way to the Top!!

October 30, 2007
Some things you read and just can't believe. I came across this story of the little girl who wrote Steve Jobs a letter suggesting some imrpovements to the iPod, which she loved. The letter she got back was... well, let's say it left me speechless. http://www.macworld.co.uk/news/index.cfm?RSS&NewsID=14386 Here's some nice user feedback on the topic too: http://www.overlawyered.com/2006/04/letter_from_apple_lawyer

Errors Can be Fun

October 30, 2007
A few years ago there was an article on SQLServerCentral.com that gave us some screenshots of some of the funnier windows and program errors. Here's my contribution to the lot. Yesterday I was troubleshooting a LiteSpeed problem and clicked on one of the EXEs in the program folder to be presented with this message. Ya just gotta love programmers. The Primal Urge to Deploy

October 29, 2007
I've talked before about my love for PrimalScript as a VBScript and JavaScript editor. It's just got some features that I've grown to really love. Well unfortunately I just don't get the chance to use it that much anymore because most of the web coding I do is in .NET and I tend to do all that coding in Visual Studio for all the class helpers and such. And since I'm a DBA, and not a Windows admin, I just don't d

How long does it Take?

October 05, 2007
OK, here we are quite a bit of time after Yukon SP2 and we still don't have an ordered list if SSIS packages. Seriously guys, how long does it take to put an order by clause on the end of that query? Currently, SSIS packages are sorted by import date. I don't know who thought that was a good idea, but I have a hard time believing that I'm the only one complaining about this. MS has a huge IT dept and they use th

It's Not me this time!

October 01, 2007
OK, again with the backup wars... for those of you who have followed me for a long time you'll remember a few yrs ago I did a piece on Idera vs. Imceda. And this was for backup products, right... so SQLSafe vs. LiteSpeed. And IF you remember back that far you remember how heated the outcome was and the extremely poor rating I gave Idera in that roundup. I stood by it then, and I stand by it now. I just don't thi

Happier Wars

September 28, 2007
All of you who follow me, know that I've kept pretty good tabs on the backup wars as I was there not only from the beginning, I appear to have been a major player. And while I haven't kept you all up to date with what's going on now, I will soon. What I want to talk about now is a new war that's about to be waged. This is completely uncharted territory just like backups were when LiteSpeed came onto the scene. W
