There will always be solutions that IT has to cook up itself, but in the main, your business' needs and problems are not unique. Your plumbing is certainly not special. IT is filled with people who are continuously buying, upgrading, configuring, deploying, and maintaining largely identical machinery (software and hardware) for different employers. The amount of busywork invested in keeping the trade in commodity technology alive is mindboggling.

If the battery in your iPhone goes dead or the carriage drive belt snaps in your printer, the procedure for replacing either might be less complicated than the assembly instructions for a particle board TV stand. If you're a tinkerer and you don't mind reducing a product to a pile of hobby parts, go to town. Some find this sort of activity enjoyable, and there's a fair education to be had as well. But most of us won't bring that "let's crack this puppy open" ethos to work. If a machine breaks in business, it isn't a job for the office's self-identified Mr. Handy.

Convenience, low or no cost, bundling, and the thrill of "the new" draw users and subscribers into clouds and to other varieties of online applications (Web 2.0, RIA, mobile) and services. By the same token, a shot at recurring subscription revenue, brand/platform stickiness, elimination of piracy, or a non-paying user base primed for targeted marketing is carrying businesses into the online space. It's unstoppable.

When I first heard "Nehalem," it called to mind the noise that Felix Unger from "The Odd Couple" made to clear his sinuses. If Intel gets its way, its Nehalem CPU and system architecture will have a similar effect on the clogged-up market. I'm hoping it will clear bogged down workloads.
