Anthony Hill, Golden Gate University
The CTO of San Francisco-based Golden
Gate University, exemplified the role of an action-oriented IT manager in
2002, using an Internet-based business model to transform the school's IT
structure, modernizing it in a cost-effective way. As part of his aggressive
approach, Hill began instituting Oracle database applications across campus
systems and drawing up plans for Web services implementation where possible.
Will Sterling, Island ECN
If you're looking for advice on efficiently designing
and running a datacenter for an around-the-clock operation, then Will Sterling
is your man. As president and CTO of New York-based Island ECN, an
exchange where as many as 15 million stock orders can be matched and
executed electronically daily, Sterling has designed a set of datacenters that
employ about 2,000 Intel-based machines each. With the acquisition of Island
by Instinet, also based in New York, Sterling now also serves as head of
Instinet's Broker-Dealer Execution and Clearing Group.

Using what has come to be known as the
cross-organizational Roadmap initiative, Enzo Micali's enterprise approach is
aimed at positioning Westbury, N.Y.-based 1-800-Flowers.com for rapid
growth and scalability. He has defined the company's technology architecture
and integrated acquired affliates: Plow & Hearth, Magic Cabin Dolls,
HearthSong, and the recently acquired The Popcorn Factory. Through Micali's
leadership, the Roadmap will be used as an ongoing framework for all IT
budgeting and hiring.
