Textron Chief Technologist Phyllis Michaelides is
responsible for using technology to improve business
processes and promote the strategic use of IT, as
well as planning the direction of major technology
projects across the $13 billion, Providence,
R.I.-based global manufacturing conglomerate.
Streamlining disparate business units and legacy
applications, integration, and consolidation of
important information within the enterprise have
been key projects. Under her leadership, the
company created a unified LDAP-based directory of
all salaried employees. She spearheaded development
of "centers of excellence" to help build an
interconnected enterprise.
Influence at Textron is achieved by consensus,
working with enterprise councils and teams, Michaelides says. "Close contact
and engagement with these groups is essential in building awareness and
acceptance of an enterprise technical strategy," she says.
Michaelides has also lead a project to acquire a product (and train staff to
use it) that will cleanse data and provide a valuable means of looking at
Textron's information from an enterprise viewpoint, a tool that is especially
powerful in working with vendors and preparing for ERP implementations.
