Gene Rogers, Boeing

As the chief technologist at Boeing Space Systems' Huntington Beach, Calif.-based engineering organization, Gene Rogers recently worked on a $300 million NASA contract to develop critical technologies for a next-generation reusable launch vehicle. Rogers' analyses, strategies, and marketing approaches helped focus NASA's space launch initiative on high-payoff technical solutions and business models to improve the cost and safety of delivering payloads and people to destinations in orbit. His past work includes providing technology for Mir Space Station's docking hardware. Rogers holds five international patents.

"In a proliferated company that has as many high-value product lines as Boeing, influence becomes much more important than authority," Rogers says. "Authority imparts some measure of influence, but influence also derives from reputation, visibility, ... technical breadth."

Current economic trends are imposing substantive changes, Rogers says. "Large companies will eventually outsource everything except top management. That will generate many more small companies that will be linked electronically but not necessarily geographically. ... Career success will stem from developing unique competitive skills, and allying with enterprises that are effective integrators of competitive skills."
