Allan McLaughlin, LexisNexis

Under Allan McLaughlin's leadership, $1.9 billion information provider and publisher LexisNexis has aggressively redefined vendor relations. In the past year, McLaughlin has singled out low-value vendors and replaced them with larger "tier one" vendors, allowing the Dayton, Ohio-based Reed Elsevier subsidiary to request additional volume discounts.

McLaughlin's attentions have gone beyond cost cutting. The CTO worked closely with sales and marketing to better deliver the company's technology story and service capabilities. As a result of time spent with customers, McLaughlin has become one of those CTOs whom other IT executives call on time and again.

He sees a difference between leading and managing. "Leading requires listening more than talking, keeping issues within a greater perspective, acting in the best interest of the company and team," McLaughlin says.

The CTO also created the LexisNexis Executive On Loan program where he donates the time and talent of a LexisNexis middle management employee to the Greater Dayton IT Alliance (GDITA) for one year. He worked with GDITA to create a training consortium for all companies in the community. "I spend a considerable amount of time establishing a 'learning' environment -- identifying gaps in skills and figuring out how best to fill the gap," McLaughlin says.
