Mark Halstead, Keen

At San Francisco-based Keen, knowledge from all over the globe comes together in one marketplace. Keen serves as the connection mechanism for the more than 8.7 million members seeking advice and information.

Mark Halstead, CTO, is involved with both Keen's technical strategy planning and day-to-day development work and also constantly evaluates emerging technologies. VoIP (voice over IP), for example, holds promise for Keen's business, and Halstead is keeping an eye on peer-to-peer transfer technology and Web services, which could open up new avenues when the technologies mature.

"My concerns are, When are we going to do [these new features we want]; and how, with the resources we have? How are we going to migrate the technology we have now in the right steps over the next year or two?" Halstead says. "But that's a happy problem to have."

Halstead says it's important to approach decisions with both the long-term and short-term effects in mind -- in his case, pushing the Keen marketplace and platform ahead in a coordinated fashion based on available resources.

"If you've got your finger both on what people want to do a year from now and what people want to do three weeks from now, it really does help fill in the gaps and create a thorough timeline," Halstead says.
