Adobe has released a Linux beta version of its Adobe FrameMaker, and its Adobe Acrobat Distiller software will be available on Linux in the first quarter of next year, the company said in a statement Wednesday.

The company also has a Linux version of its Adobe Acrobat Reader software available as a free download from its Web site.

Adobe FrameMaker is a publishing application that includes a word processing program and formatting tools and which outputs the documents to HTML, Extensible Markup Language (XML), or Acrobat files, as well as for print.

Adobe Acrobat Distiller is a server-based application designed to convert PostScript files to Adobe .PDF files in high volumes.

Linux has generated buzz this year because of the growing support from heavyweights such as IBM and Dell, coupled with successful IPOs (initial public offerings) from newcomers such as Red Hat Software and, more recently, VA Linux Systems.

The beta version of Adobe FrameMaker for Linux can be downloaded at the company Web site.

Adobe Systems Inc., in San Jose, Calif., is at www.adobe.com.
