Motorola aims high availability Linux at telcos

MOTOROLA'S COMPUTER GROUP in May will begin to ship High Availability Linux, which it calls HA Linux, as a new embedded computing platform for telecommunications providers.
According to Motorola Computer Group, the platform is the first Linux product for carrier-grade networking, wireless, and Internet applications that has high availability needs with little downtime. The product is aimed at operation administration and maintenance platforms, IP (Internet protocol) gateways, gatekeepers, home-location registers, and call servers, the Motorola group said in a statement on Monday.
HA Linux allows users to hot-swap system components including processors, power modules and fans, and I/O controllers. It also has active standby and CPU, so that applications continue running while managers switch to backup processors. In addition, it offers SNMP (simple network management protocol) support with an SNMP agent and system MIB (management information base) that allows system changes and events to be monitored and managed by the network and operations management system.
