BlackBerry allows global roaming

RESEARCH IN MOTION (RIM) Wednesday launched two new BlackBerry handhelds for global travelers.
The BlackBerry 6710 can be used in North America, Asia Pacific and Europe, on 900/1900 MHz GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications)/GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) networks. The second new BlackBerry, the 6720, can only be used within Asia Pacific and Europe on the 900/1800 MHz frequency GSM/GPRS networks, RIM said.
Both of the Java-based handhelds offer e-mail, phone, SMS (short message service) browser and organizer applications, RIM said. The announcement was made at the CTIA (Cellular
Telecommunications and Internet Association) Wireless IT event in Las Vegas.
RIM has also introduced a new Web-based application with the handhelds, called BlackBerry Web Client. This supports ISP (Internet service provider) e-mail accounts through the POP3 (point of presence) protocol, allowing users to access multiple existing e-mail accounts from their handheld. A default Web mail account is also provided.
Pricing and services will be determined by network carriers, RIM said, and availability will vary by country and carrier.
