Alongside technology maturation, the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and current economic downturn have sharpened the focus on solving business problems, said Greg Howard, an analyst at and founder of the HTRC Group in San Andreas, Calif. "[CDN] technology will continue to mature as time goes on, but these market events place additional pressures to shape the services and how they are delivered," he said. "These providers are hungry so they are willing to meet with customers and understand their needs."

Drilling into customer pain points such as disaster recovery and security, Cambridge, Mass.-based Akamai Technologies will announce EdgeSuite for Business Continuity, which taps the company's EdgeSuite CDN for site availability and security capabilities. New features include EdgeSuite Site Shield, which serves as a barrier between an origin server and the Internet; site fail-over options to replace costly mirror sites; and distributed DNS and DoS (denial of service) protection across its servers.

Meanwhile, Cable & Wireless subsidiary Digital Island will unveil its ITM (Intelligent Traffic Management) service offering users a slice of the larger CDN pie. ITM provides a layer of intelligent traffic redirection to boost datacenter performance. Also, AT&T will enhance its business continuity portfolio for VPN, security, and hosting services; Trellix will announce Version 4.0 of its private-label Web site publishing platform and a partnership with Interliant; and F5 Networks will unveil Edge-FX Cache with SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) acceleration and content distribution.
