Siebel Consumer Goods Handheld and Siebel ePharma Handheld are being readied for release on the newly announced Siebel 7 applications platform, according to Brian Stone, director of product marketing for mobile solutions at Siebel.

Enhancements include a streamlined user interface, navigation, and usability improvements and more efficient synchronization with backend servers, either via direct connections to the server or through a laptop PC. Also planned is support for printing, Stone said.

The consumer goods application enables tracking of inventories for such consumer items as beverages by delivery personnel. The ePharma product enables tracking of sales and delivery of pharmaceuticals.

Pocket PC is the chosen platform for the applications, rather than Palm's PalmOS, because of the Microsoft OS' multithreading, RAM, and processing power, Stone said.

"Pocket PC has multithreading and large amounts of RAM and significant processing power, and so for applications like consumer goods sales and pharmaceutical sales management, we think it's the right platform," Stone said.

Siebel does have a general sales application for PalmOS that is available for Siebel 7, but the company has no plans to build vertical applications for pharmaceuticals and consumer goods on PalmOS, he said.
