Siebel readying mobile apps for Pocket PC By Paul Krill October 15, 2001 5:56 pm PT SIEBEL SYSTEMS IN late 2001 plans to announce upgrades to applications that enable tracking of consumer goods inventories and pharmaceuticals on handhelds, but the offerings will only be supported on Microsoft's Pocket PC platform and not on Palm OS.
Enhancements include a streamlined user interface, navigation, and usability improvements and more efficient synchronization with backend servers, either via direct connections to the server or through a laptop PC. Also planned is support for printing, Stone said. The consumer goods application enables tracking of inventories for such consumer items as beverages by delivery personnel. The ePharma product enables tracking of sales and delivery of pharmaceuticals. Pocket PC is the chosen platform for the applications, rather than Palm's PalmOS, because of the Microsoft OS' multithreading, RAM, and processing power, Stone said. "Pocket PC has multithreading and large amounts of RAM and significant processing power, and so for applications like consumer goods sales and pharmaceutical sales management, we think it's the right platform," Stone said. Siebel does have a general sales application for PalmOS that is available for Siebel 7, but the company has no plans to build vertical applications for pharmaceuticals and consumer goods on PalmOS, he said.
