Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server is the security and performance arm of Microsoft's .NET enterprise servers, the company said in a release. Microsoft touts the ISA Server's ability to protect the network from unauthorized access, defend it from external attacks, perform security inspections on incoming and outgoing network traffic, and to alert administrators to suspicious activity.

ISA Server uses packet filtering, circuit-level filtering, and application filtering to provide protection at multiple network layers. It also supports virtual private networking and predefines about 100 application protocols, allowing administrators to define additional protocols based on port number, type, transmission control protocol or user datagram protocol, and direction.

ISA Server also integrates a Web cache, allowing faster downloads of frequently accessed data. The cache supports symmetric multiprocessing, with up to four processors in the standard edition, scheduled content downloads and streaming media support.

Microsoft prices the standard edition of ISA server at $1,499 per processor; the scalable enterprise edition is priced at $5,999 per processor.
