Lucent raises the optical networking bar

LUCENT TECHNOLOGIES MONDAY boosted the power of its DWDM (dense wave division multiplexing) system, raising the number of wavelengths the system can handle from 80 to 320. In addition, Global Crossing said it would be the first carrier to test the system as part of its construction of a worldwide optical network.
The new WaveStar OLS 800G is a 320-channel DWDM system with a maximum capacity of 800Gbps. The 800G will be offered as an upgrade to Lucent's WaveStar OLS 400G, an 80-channel DWDM system that Lucent said it has shipped to more than 40 customers.
As part of its preferred supplier agreement with Lucent, Global Crossing also will test Lucent's WaveStar LambdaRouter, a high-capacity optical switch that can route up to 265 individual optical signals, Lucent said. The LambdaRouter uses microscopic mirrors to direct and route optical signals from fiber to fiber without converting them to electrical signals. Global Crossing said it will begin field trials of the LambdaRouter in June, with live network use beginning in September.
Lucent said the WaveStar OLS 800G will be commercially available in the first quarter of 2001.
