Enterprise Demands are Shifting the Cloud Computing Landscape

The key is adopting a hybrid strategy


The initiatives put forth today by business leaders require enterprises to leverage advanced technology to deliver new and superior business outcomes. While public and private clouds are growing, enterprises are increasingly adopting a hybrid strategy leveraging public cloud to gain instant access to on-demand capacity and on premises, private cloud for core IP and their stable workloads. This approach gives IT managers the ability to manage fluctuations in their business cycle, reduce capital costs and free up time and resources needed to develop new applications.                                                                                                 

A recent Intel study showed that about 45% of current public cloud usage by businesses is driven by new, cloud-enabled workloads. These are workloads such as powerful cloud-based HPC solutions that some IT organizations wouldn’t have done on premise (due to capital outlay and complexity) but can with public cloud ease of access and cost.

The Future of the Datacenter 

Cloud installations are based on maintaining a reliable, secure, and high performing environment essential to enterprise success. And with enhanced solutions such as virtual private networks and orchestration management provided by public service providers, IT decision-makers are finding that integrating public cloud into the hybrid strategy is a viable way to accelerate delivery of cloud services. 

At Intel, our goal is to aid enterprises and CSPs by increasing the performance, security, and analytics of our technologies so they can realize greater efficiencies. The latest release of the Intel® Xeon® processor E5-2600 v4 offers up to 44 percent better performance, improved server utilization, and better virtualization performance, including reducing virtual machine (VM) downtime by as much as 70 percent compared to earlier processors.1

Intel also offers Intel Xeon E7 v3 for large memory workloads like SAP HANA. Today, Amazon offers the EC2 X1 instances designed for large-scale, in memory applications in the cloud. In addition, Microsoft recently announced a new set of large instance types that delivers the most powerful SAP certified public cloud infrastructure to handle the largest SAP HANA workloads. These examples demonstrate how cloud providers are providing new deployment options to enterprises. 

Selecting cloud service providers (CSPs) that are deploying the foundational technologies that enable a flexible, secure and cost effective cloud infrastructure, ready to keep pace with the speed of business, is essential. Enterprises need CSPs that deliver simplified cloud services that are deployed on proven technologies that power high-performance, energy-efficient, and secure cloud environments. For example, Oracle offers general purpose and high memory compute, deployed on enterprise-grade infrastructure including the Cloud Exadata Service powered by top of the line E5 and E7 to provide the full power of the Oracle Database and mission-critical applications on the Oracle Public Cloud.

Additionally, Intel® Resource Director Technology enables improved enterprise and service provider orchestration and utilization inside the datacenter. This technology allows for fully-automated clouds and better control over shared resources such as processor caches and main memory to enhance the agility and scalability of the infrastructure.

Intel Cloud Integrity Technology 3.0 (CIT) further enhances security features of Intel Xeon processors to enable CSPs to assure enterprise customers that applications running in the cloud run on trusted servers and that VM configurations have not been altered. 1&1 Internet is working with Intel on leveraging Cloud Integrity Technology features to offer customers better control and visibility over their data hosted in 1&1’s cloud infrastructure without sacrificing performance. IBM/Softlayer is leveraging CIT to ensure that only approved geographies are used for running sensitive workloads and decrypting sensitive data. For example, a cloud located in England may not want a computer from the USA accessing a workload in the England cloud. Intel’s CIT can restrict access to the USA machine by not allowing a certain workload to be deployed outside the cloud to a different geo.

This allows organizations to deploy workloads in the public cloud with confidence, knowing that the technology that runs in your enterprise datacenter also runs in your public cloud. Regardless of which cloud computing model the enterprise adopts, Intel technology simplifies deployment and streamlines operations.
