If you hit a GsDraw error (1) message after installing last week’s patches, KB 3065979 should fix it

The May Patch Tuesday crop included two patches, KB 3045171 and KB 3057110, that were implicated in crashes with GDI+ when you used it to create text-outline-based paths on Windows 7 or earlier. As I explained earlier this week, Golden Software users in particular were complaining of an error that looks like this:

Surfer Error / GsDraw error (1): GenericError / Module GsDraw, File Path.cpp, Line 953

At the time, Microsoft acknowledged the problem.

Now comes word that there’s a fix for the bug in KB 3045171, but the fix has a new number, KB 3065979. The new patch doesn’t yet appear on Microsoft’s official update list.

As part of MS15-044 and MS15-051, the original KB 3045171 was an important update -- anyone with Automatic Update turned on got it. We aren’t sure at the moment if KB 3065979, the fix, will also go out as a recommended update, and thus be tagged as Important in Windows Update. It hasn’t started showing up on our machines.

It may be considered a hotfix and, as such, won’t go into the Automatic Update chute. You just have to kind of know that you need it.
