At least one of the optional Windows updates Microsoft released yesterday is running into problems. Messages are popping up in every corner of the Web that patch KB 3022345 -- an "update to enable the Diagnostics Tracking Service in Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2" -- triggers an installation failure 800F0922.
KB 3022345 is one of the massive set of 34 patches I warned about earlier this week.
The problem is unpredictable: KB 3022345 installs fine on a couple of my Windows 8.1 PCs, but falls over on others. There's no indication as to why or how or what to do to make it work.
Poster Nuluvius on the Linustechtips forum got it right:
Don't you just simply love it when this kind of thing happens. No explanation, very few resources found online and a sparse unhelpful entry in both event log and windows update log.
I guess that's what you get for checking the box to install an optional Windows update.
