Mac OS X Lion adds a new reading list mode in Safari. Unfortunately, if you aren't interested in using it you can't easily get rid of the reading list icon that shows up in the Safari interface. Don't despair, however, it is possible to rid Safari of this annoying little bugger.
Here's how you do it.
1. Open a terminal window.
2. Type in the following command:
defaults write com.apple.Safari ProxiesInBookmarksBar '("Top Sites")'
To bring the reading list back, use this command:
defaults write com.apple.Safari ProxiesInBookmarksBar '("Top Sites","Reading List")'
