Here's how you can enable recursive search for Nautilus in Ubuntu 14.04.

1. Open a terminal window.

2. Type in the following command then hit Enter.

gsettings set org.gnome.nautilus.preferences enable-interactive-search false

3. You can disable recursive search with this command.

gsettings set org.gnome.nautilus.preferences enable-interactive-search true

This time recursive search is replaced with type-ahead search in Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty. If you like that feature simply one command to enable/disable it.
