Install Cinnamon desktop in Ubuntu 14.04

Add the Cinnamon desktop to your Ubuntu 14.04 system

Cinnamon is a popular Linux desktop based on GTK+ that got its start as a fork of GNOME Shell. Cinnamon was created for the Linux Mint distro, but you can also use it in Ubuntu.

Note: The source site for this tip has posted the following warning so please bear it in mind before you read the install instructions below:

Warning: If you are using any other Mint application, remove that application and PPA from your system. If you added our Mint PPA first remove it with this command:

sudo apt-get install ppa-purge && sudo ppa-purge ppa:noobslab/mint

Here's how you can install the Cinnamon desktop in Ubuntu 14.04.

1. Open a terminal window.

2. Type in the following commands then hit Enter after each:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:lestcape/cinnamon

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install cinnamon

3. Use these commands to remove Cinnamon:

sudo apt-get install ppa-purge

sudo ppa-purge ppa:lestcape/cinnamon
