F-Secure launches e-mail security appliance

P-Series gateway offers spam and virus protection and a single management console

F-Secure announced the launch of an e-mail filtering gateway that offers spam and virus protection and a single management console for network administrators.

The F-Secure Messaging Security Gateway P-Series is intended for use by universities, governments, and large enterprises, the company said. It has a Linux OS and uses antispam technology from Proofpoint Inc. that analyzes the structural content and attributes of messages to separate valid and suspicious ones.

F-Secure said the P-series can be deployed in cluster configurations to accommodate data centers located in different places. Administrators use a Web-based interface to set e-mail policies, monitor the infrastructure, and configure features for end users.

The P-series can be used in tandem with identity management systems such as Microsoft's Active Directory, IBM's Domino Directory, or other LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) sources, F-Secure said.

The appliance's firewall guards against network attacks while preserving bandwidth, F-Secure said.
