Fluke Networks hones in on VoIP

Latest release of Visual UpTime Select delivers VoIP analysis down to the per-call level

Joining a line of other network-monitoring companies boosting the VoIP intelligence of their wares, Fluke Networks on Monday unfurled enhancements to its Visual UpTime Select network and application management solution.

Version 2.0 of Visual UpTime Select brings enhancements to the product's VoIP module, equipping network managers with additional tools for planning, monitoring, managing, and optimizing VoIP deployments. Fluke added Visual UpTime Select to its product line with the recent acquisition of Visual Networks.

"With this latest release, Visual UpTime Select delivers the granular visibility required for complete VoIP lifecycle management," said Jeff Lime, president of Fluke's Visual Networks division and senior vice president for Fluke's Enterprise and Datacom Marketing division. 

With these improvements network managers can, among other things, calculate the all-important MOS (mean opinion score) -- the standard for assessing the overall quality of a phone conversation -- of each and every call, according to Naresh Kannan, director of product management at Everett, Wash.-based Fluke.

Call data is monitored in real time, and managers can create alerts that will inform them when VoIP performance drops below a certain level. Moreover, the system retains detailed VoIP call data, allowing managers to examine after the fact what might have caused call degradation, such as a conflicting application or a misconfiguration.

The release also incorporates a number of in-depth performance reports.  From a centralized console, administrators can access on-demand reports of trends and patterns across the VoIP network including MOS distribution by hour per site, MOS over time per site, sites with most VoIP calls, worst performing VoIP sites, and overall VoIP performance. 

Moreover, according to Kannan, Visual UpTime Select can create reports to help you plan a VoIP deployment, telling you "what will happen if you try to deploy VoIP or what the performance of calls will likely be."

Other reports can help companies assess how adding more users or new applications to the network will affect VoIP performance.

Telecommunication companies such as AT&T and Verizon employ Visual UpTime Select for their managed VoIP services, according to Kannan. He added 130 of the Fortune 500 companies use it as well.

The release is available now at no charge to existing Visual UpTime Select VoIP module customers. For new customers, pricing begins at $795 per site.
