You're worried about finding or keeping a job right now. One way to improve your chances of getting or keeping an IT job is to improve your technical skills. You could spend thousands of dollars on training for certifications in Cisco or Microsoft or others, but if you're not employed (or worried about losing your job), then you don't want to spend a lot of cash. My favorite alternative is to spend a fraction of the money to buy some good technical books and teach yourself new skills.
I had the pleasure of speaking with Julie Miller from Apress Publishing this past weekend at the 7th annual Southern California Linux Expo (SCALE). Apress has an impressive catalog of books available on their web site. And I have to give a tip of my hat to Apress for making the catalog available in a downloadable CSV format. That's a nice touch.
In addition to their dozen or so titles on Apple computing and iPhones, Apress has started publishing the "fruit" series of Apple-related titles, including about eight titles for Mac OS X and iPhone programming. Julie explained that their iPhone SDK book has been hitting the US bestseller list for the past four months.
Not to be missed is the Apress eBook Deal of the Day. Each day a different eBook is sold for USD$10.00 for 24 hours. This is typically a substantial discount off of the regular eBook price.
We should be getting a review book or two soon, and will post a detailed review here. So stay tuned for our reviews, and visit the Apress web site to find the technical books that will help you advance your tech skills and set your career on the right path!
