Project description: Nationwide overhauled its call center operations with project ZOOM, a Jacada WorkSpace-based desktop initiative that serves 26 business systems to representatives' desktops, integrating them with the company's comprehensive SOA infrastructure.

Project description: The New England School of Law upgraded its infrastructure to take advantage of virtualization technologies and transition its two datacenters from a DAS to a SAN environment, achieving high availability and a reduced carbon footprint.

Project description: OhioHealth achieved a 20:1 server consolidation ratio and a more robust disaster recovery plan by migrating more than 100 custom applications to a VMware-based virtualized server environment.

Public Safety Wi-Fi Initiative

Project description: Oklahoma City IT built out an extensive Wi-Fi mesh network using technology from Tropos, Accela, Motorola, and NetMotion and integrated CAD, reporting, records management, GPS tracking, Web-based crime databases, mapping systems, video monitoring, and the vast majority of the city's IT apps into the network.

Project description: Pitney Bowes Canada overhauled its field service infrastructure, tapping communication technology from Antenna Software, while transitioning its legacy CRM system to Siebel and shifting its field workers from Windows Mobile to BlackBerry devices, to construct a real-time mobile field service platform with hooks into the company's existing field service mainframe.

Global Network for Unified Communications

Project description: Polycom's comprehensive transformation of its network infrastructure began with a bottom-up design of the company's global WAN and LAN environments, with an emphasis on reducing the latency, jitter, and packet loss of high-definition video, VoIP, and business app traffic, spanning 500 network devices and 5,000 end-user devices at more than 40 locations.

Real-Time Vehicle Emissions Tracking Platform

Project description: To help customers of its alternative fueling stations, Propel developed the CleanDrive carbon emission tracking platform, tapping several open source technologies. The system networks Propel's clean-fuel locations, links fuel purchases to customer records, and presents users with calculated emissions reductions based on their fuel blend preferences.

Windows Server Virtualization

Project lead: Brian Baker, VP IT Infrastructure; Matthew Clark, Director of IT; Paul Poppleton, Senior Staff Engineer

Project description: Qualcomm virtualized 75 percent of its Windows application server environment tapping VMware ESX, Virtual Center, and VMotion; Platespin Power Convert for P2V (physical-to-virtual) migration; and Virtugo Optimize for greater guest VM density. Among the servers virtualized were Active Directory, IIS, and SMS, affecting nearly all employees and reaping more than $25 million in datacenter costs.

The system identifies IT resources across the company to pool processing resources, tapping servers, mainframes, and individual desktops.

Project description: Singapore Health's mobile e-paper initiative brought together Tablet PCs, campuswide WLAN infrastructure, Bluetooth bar-code readers, RFID and biometric security, and SSO to create a secure, mobile, paperless information transmission and retrieval system for the National Health Center.

Lessons Learned Integration: Information Management Architecture

Project lead: Steven Mains, Colonel

Project description: The Center for Army Lessons Learned re-architected its pull-based information sharing strategy to a full-fledged push-based L2I (lessons learned integration) network, replacing its previous e-mail- and forum-dependent knowledge management system with an architecture integrated across 72 organizations. The L2I program has disseminated more than 265,000 products, briefed more than 54,000 soldiers and leaders, and has transferred more than 24,000 lessons from military and civilian analysts to forces both in combat and stationed in the United States.
