What is the VMware and Salesforce cloud collaboration?

Will VMForce.com provide a virtualization-as-a-service offering from these two giants?

It sounds like a new partnership is forming. An open invitation has been issued to sign up and register to be one of the first to hear about a brand-new joint product announcement between VMware, the virtualization market leader, and Salesforce.com, an industry-leading software-as-a-service (SaaS) company.

As of now, there are very few details. What we do know is that there will be an online Webcast taking place live on April 27 at 10:30 a.m. PDT. The location? A new Website, vmforce.com, which as of now simply states that Salesforce.com CEO Marc Benioff and VMware CEO Paul Maritz "will make an exciting joint product announcement on the future of cloud computing."

With so much confusion around this technological newcomer called cloud computing, it will be interesting to hear exactly where these two industry giants are planning to take it.

With the competitive heat being turned up in the hypervisor and virtualization markets, VMware has been expanding its horizons up into the cloud with its recent acquisitions of SpringSource and Zimbra.

Much like VMware, Salesforce.com is no longer content with leading an aging and competitive market like CRM. After bringing its solution into the cloud, the company has been making efforts to expand its presence in the cloud with new technology such as Force.com, its development platform located in the company's own cloud infrastructure.

The blogosphere and Twitterverse are already speculating what the announcement will be about. There isn't much more than a domain name and the companies' reputations, technologies, and trends to provide any real clues. Easy money has odds on some sort of virtualization-as-a-service or hosted virtual desktop or server for end-users that will compete with cloud offerings from Amazon and Microsoft.

What's your guess? What will VMware and Salesforce bring to market? What will vmforce.com offer?
