Employers are paying higher premiums for IT skills that don't come with a piece of paper, though hands-on experience remains a big draw

In what skills, then, should an IT pro invest his or her time learning? Overall, IT certifications earning the highest pay premiums, according to Foote, include:

  • Oracle Certified Master, Java EE Enterprise Architect (formerly Sun SCEA)
  • Oracle SOA Architect Certified Expert
  • OCM (Oracle DBA Administration Certified Master)
  • Teradata Certified Master
  • PMP (Project Management Professional)
  • Master IT Certified Architect (ITAC/The Open Group)
  • CyberSecurity Forensic Analyst
  • Multiple GIAC security certifications, including GCIH (GIAC Certified Incident Handler), GCIA (Intrusion Analyst), and Secure Software Programmer for .Net and for Java
  • Various Cisco certifications, including CCIE (Certified Internetwork Expert), CCDP (Design Professional), and CCDE (Design Expert)
  • MCA (Microsoft Certified Architect)
  • Three HP systems administration and engineering certifications, including HP Master ASE (Accredited Systems Engineers), HP/AIS (Accredited Integration Specialist), and ASE (Systems Engineer)

Finally, the noncertified skills earning the highest pay premiums include:

  • More than two dozen SAP and business application skills, including SAP HANA (In-Memory Appliance), SAP NetWeaver Visual Composer, SAP CFM, SAP EBP (e-Procurement), SAP BW Accelerator, and SAP PS (Project Systems)
  • Web/e-commerce development skills, including Documentum, Python, Microsoft Commerce Server, .Net, and Sharepoint Server; social networking skills; Oracle Workflow; and SOAP
  • Management, process, and methodology skills, including business process management, business performance management, TOGAF (The Open Group Architecture Framework), information risk management, project management, and quantitative analysis
  • Systems and networking skills, including virtualization, security (DW/BI, ERP, Web, and project assignments), network security management, and wireless network management
  • All forms of Unix
  • Database skills including database management, Oracle DB/8i/9i/10g/11i, Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise, Informatica, and Microsoft SQL Server
