#SOPA beats out #Sandy and #Olympics as top Google+ hashtag for 2012

iPad 3, meanwhile, was the only tech term to make the top 10 searches for the year

#SOPA was the top hashtagged term on Google+ this past year, beating out such terms as #Sandy, #Discovery, #Olympics, and #Debates. Apple, meanwhile, can claim having the most-searched products on Google in 2012: iPad 3 was the fourth most-Googled term for the year.

Google's Zeitgeist 2012, an aggregation of over a trillion Google searches from the past year broken down into lists such as top overall searches, top consumer-electronic searches, and top image searches, provided the rankings. The lists provide an interesting snapshot of what topics percolated to the top of mind of the average Internet user.

The most hashtagged term on Google+ was #SOPA, referring to the highly controversial cyber-security legislation that garnered strenuous opposition and prompted sites like Reddit, Wikipedia, Boing Boing, Mozilla.org, and Tucows to go dark for a day. The fact that SOPA ranked at the top is rather interesting, considering all the major events that went down this past year, including the Olympics, the Mars Discovery landing, Hurricane Sandy, protests in the Middle East, and the U.S. presidential election. But then, we are talking about the most hashtagged terms specifically on Google+ and not, say, Twitter, so the sample likely isn't all too representative of the average social networker.

The list of top 10 Google+ Hashtags of 2012 is as follows:

  1. #SOPA
  2. #Awesome
  3. #Sandy
  4. #IO12
  5. #Curiosity
  6. #Olympics
  7. #SXSW
  8. #Debate
  9. #BlastFromThePast
  10. #Eastwooding

Apple, meanwhile, proved to be the purveyor of the most Google-searched products for 2012. iPad 3 ranked fourth on the list of overall top 10 Google searches for 2012. Topping that list was "Whitney Houston," followed by "Gangam Style" in the second spot, and "Hurricane Sandy" in the third. The top 10 list is as follows:

  1. Whitney Houston
  2. Gangnam Style
  3. Hurricane Sandy
  4. iPad 3
  5. Diablo 3
  6. Kate Middleton
  7. Olympics 2012
  8. Amanda Todd
  9. Michael Clarke Duncan
  10. BBB12

Google also ranked the most-searched consumer products for 2012, and here, Apple fared quite well with three of its products, iPad 3, iPad Mini, and iPad 4, making the list. The company's nemesis Samsung, however, made a credible showing: The Samsung Galaxy S3 was second on the list, and the Galaxy Note 2 was fifth.

Following is the full list of top 10 most searched consumer products for the year:

  1. iPad 3
  2. Samsung Galaxy S3
  3. iPad Mini
  4. Nexus 7
  5. Galaxy Note 2
  6. PlayStation
  7. iPad 4
  8. Microsoft Surface
  9. Kindle Fire
  10. Nokia Lumia 920
