Cloud computing has been on almost every IT organizations' buzz word bingo sheet for many years, but still only a fraction of organizations out there today have successfully completed their "journey to the cloud." Even VMware -- a company synonymous with server virtualization -- has over the last few years turned its attention to the cloud. At last year's VMworld virtualization conference, the theme was "Your Cloud, Own It." A year later, the VMworld 2012 conference theme was "Right Here. Right Now." And VMware was telling show attendees "this is the time to enter the new cloud era."
So is this the year of the cloud? Like VMware, VMTurbo seems to think so. Also like VMware, VMTurbo has its roots in virtualization. The company started out managing VMware ESX hypervisors and virtual machines, but it is now looking to the sky and updating its technology to bring additional intelligence and management to the cloud with the release of Operations Manager 3.2.

And while there are several new features in version 3.2 of Operations Manager, intelligent workload onboarding is truly the centerpiece of this release.
Derek Slayton, vice president of marketing at VMTurbo, told InfoWorld, "As cloud adoption continues to grow, organizations and IT departments are deploying new virtual workloads daily, leading to an explosion in the demand for solutions with greater intelligence, agility, and automation to help alleviate the pain associated with the process of onboarding to private, public, and hybrid clouds." Slayton went on to say that current solutions on the market facilitate the mechanics of deployment but don't take into account the actual point-in-time availability of physical resources in the continuously changing cloud and virtual data centers into which these applications will be placed.
Individuals responsible for deploying new workloads in this type of environment should appreciate VMTurbo's latest release, especially if they are continually introducing and decommissioning workloads in a cloud environment. Onboarding is still a complex function, and isn't just about creating a virtual machine and then placing it into the cloud environment. Organizations still need to plan resource utilization and ensure the new workload doesn't overwhelm the available physical resources that are shared with other workloads.

It also allows users to leverage rich APIs that can be integrated with third-party solutions such as VMware vCloud Director and CloudStack for provisioning images and assigning IP addresses, further improving the efficiency of the onboarding process.
