Intel ships 1 million quad-core CPUs

Xeon 5300 series has helped lead Intel's recovery in the server chip market, taking share away from rival AMD

Intel has shipped more than 1 million quad-core Xeon 5300 microprocessors since introducing them in November 2006, meeting a goal announced by company executives earlier this year.

"We have shipped more than 1 million so far," said Danny Cheung, an Intel spokesman in Singapore. The millionth quad-core Xeon chip was shipped earlier this month, he said.

Intel's quad-core Xeon 5300 series, also known by the code name Clovertown, was released last November. The chips helped lead the company's recovery in the server chip market, taking share away from rival Advanced Micro Devices (AMD).

Intel has priced the Xeon 5300 aggressively, hoping to win more orders for its quad-core line.

The prices overlap those of Woodcrest, the code name of Intel's dual-core Xeon 5100 series. For example, Intel's Xeon E5345, which has 8MB of cache and four 2.33GHz cores, is the second-fastest Clovertown chip and is priced at $851 in 1,000-unit quantities, a standard pricing measure. That's the same price as the Xeon 5160, the fastest Woodcrest chip, which has 4MB of cache and two 3GHz cores.

Pricing for the entire Clovertown line ranges from $455 to $1,172, while the Woodcrest line prices range from $209 to $851, according to Intel's latest processor price list.
