Google acquires server software company PeakStream

Developer of software for multicore and parallel processors becomes Google's latest acquisition

Google on Tuesday acquired PeakStream, a Redwood City, Calif., developer of software for multicore and parallel processors, the company said.

The search giant declined to disclose terms of the deal, Google spokesman Aaron Zamost said by e-mail.

PeakStream's flagship product, PeakStream Workstation for Microsoft Windows, was released in beta in March. PeakStream's Web site was not available following the acquisition. A version of its product page cached on Google's Web site described it as the first commercial software product to allow programming of multicore and parallel processors, allowing optimization of these increasingly prevalent chipsets.

The company was founded in 2005 by executives from Sun Microsystems, Nvidia, EMC's VMWare, and Network Appliance. In September 2006 it raised $17 million in funding.
