Going virtual

Apologies for the “virtual” quips; I just can’t seem to stop myself

It’s virtualization week here at InfoWorld Central — and there’s virtually no escape. We kick off with “Virtualization under the hood,” a multipart primer to server, storage, app, and desktop virtualization. We’ve also overhauled our virtualization portal, adding regular updates, links to additional resources, and David Marshall’s blog and podcast.

And the pièce de résistance? Our second Virtualization Executive Forum, on Feb. 12 in San Francisco. With the goal of “Enabling Enterprise-Wide Virtualization” (the event’s theme), this one-day affair reprises the most popular sessions from the event’s premier last fall in New York, while bringing in a slew of new, high-profile presenters.

If you can’t make it to the show, you can get a taste of what all the hubbub is about: We’ll be posting the presentations from the event to our virtualization portal as of Feb. 19.

While you’re waiting for those slides, check out our latest online innovation: InfoClipz (in the spirit of Web 2.0 naming conventions, every new product should have a “z” or an “x” in it somewhere). InfoWorld InfoClipz are narrated Flash video animations that explain how a specific technology works — in three minutes or less. This week we’re premiering InfoClipz of server virtualization, storage virtualization, and software as a service. A collaboration among editors (including Doug Dineley, Eric Knorr, and Neil McAllister), our creative director and Flash wizard Ben Barbante, multimedia producer Ralitza Stoeva, and others, these tightly choreographed clips will soon become a staple on InfoWorld.com.

So take a look. I’m virtually certain you’ll like ’em.

Steve Fox is editor in chief of InfoWorld.
