Intel will spend $230 million to expand a test and assembly facility in Kulim, Malaysia, a company spokesman confirmed Thursday.
The expansion, which was announced by Intel Chairman Craig Barrett during a visit to Malaysia, will employ approximately 2,000
workers when it goes into production, said Norhizam Kadir, a spokesman for Intel. No date was given for when Intel expects
the expanded test and assembly facility to begin production.
Intel's existing plants in Kulim employ 2,500 employees and handle processor packaging and produce mobile modules, according
to its Web site. No information was available regarding what products would be handled at the new facility, which is already
under construction, Kadir said.
It marks the second significant investment that Intel has announced in Asia this week. On Monday, Intel said it would invest
over $1 billion in India. That figures includes $250 million it will invest in a venture capital fund and $800 million to
be spent over the next five years to expand its business in the country.
