EnterpriseDB has released an upgrade to its open-source database that comes with a newer code base and an open-source reporting tool called JasperReports, the company said this week.

EnterpriseDB 2005 Release 2 is based on PostgreSQL Version 8.0.4, the most recent version of the open-source code upon which EnterpriseDB is built. It also comes with a new cursor structure that more closely resembles that of Oracle, EnterpriseDB said. Like its open-source rival MySQL, EnterpriseDB tries to make its database appear like Oracle's to administrators in the hope of encouraging migrations.

Other changes include faster bulk data loading capabilities and several bug fixes and performance tweaks, said EnterpriseDB, of Edison, New Jersey. The company has also made it easier for ISVs (independent software vendors) to embed the database in their products with new installation options, it said.

The release comes at a busy time in the world of free and open-source databases. MySQL released a big upgrade to its database last week, MySQL 5, while Oracle has announced plans to offer a free database by the end of the year. A beta version of the Oracle software, which carries restrictions on how it can be used, was released this week.

Microsoft is also in the game. On Monday it's expected to release its free SQL Server 2005 Express database as part of a broader set of product introductions. The current version is called Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Edition, or MSDE.

EnterpriseDB's announcement was made Tuesday at the Open Source Business Conference in Newton, Massachusetts.
