EMC this week announced a new NAS system to its lineup, playing a tit-for-tat game with IBM in the storage market.
EMC's announcement comes on the heels of IBM's strategic deal with NAS heavyweight Network Appliance, in which Big Blue agreed
to resell NetApp's NAS systems. That announcement came on the heels of Hitachi Data Systems' announcement earlier this month
of a high-end NAS system, the Hitachi NAS Blade for the TagmaStore Universal Storage Platform.
"IBM wants to be the leader in storage systems, and they can't do this without NAS," said Tony Asaro, a senior analyst at
Enterprise Strategy Group. "EMC has been able to offer NAS as a way into IBM accounts. IBM now has a comprehensive set of
NAS solutions that in NetApp's hands has been successful at beating out EMC for its customers," he said.
EMC's latest system is the Celerra NSX, a high-end NAS gateway with new storage optimization and ease-of-use features. The
new system uses a highly scalable blade technology, increasing its storage capacity from 48TB to 112TB.
