AOL offers test version of Netscape 8, StillSecure tests network end points for compliance, Network Instruments releases Test Access Ports, and AccessLine puts a VoIP service to its offerings

AOL issues Netscape 8 beta
AOL earlier this month released the first public test version of the Netscape 8 browser. Based on Firefox, Netscape 8 uses that rendering engine but also supports Microsoft’s Internet Explorer engine. The Netscape 8 browser includes features to protect users while surfing the Web. For instance, the browser adjusts settings based on a list of known malicious Web sites to protect users from phishing scams. Also, trusted Web sites are displayed with fewer restrictions and use the IE rendering engine for maximum compatibility. The Netscape browser doesn’t include the IE engine but uses the engine in Windows. As a result, the Netscape 8 browser works only on Windows computers. The beta is available at browser.netscape.com.

StillSecure tests end-point compliance
StillSecure has released StillSecure Safe Access 3.0, software for testing and enforcing access policies against network end points. The software provides three modes for testing an end-point device’s compliance with security policy: an agentless approach, an ActiveX plug-in, or the StillSecure Agent. The ActiveX plug-in and the StillSecure Agent, both new in the latest version, can be used to test Microsoft-supported Windows operating systems. Pricing for StillSecure Safe Access 3.0 starts at $40 per user.

Network Instruments unveils traffic TAPs
Network Instruments has introduced a new line of network TAPs (Test Access Ports). Network TAPs allow traffic on network devices to be passively monitored. This line of TAPs are available as either 10/100/1000 Copper TAPs or 10/100/1000 Copper to Optical Conversion TAPs. The new TAPs integrate with Network Instruments’ line of full-duplex analyzers, as well as all third-party network analyzers and IDS, forensic, and probe appliances. Copper TAPs start at $395; Copper to Optical at $1,995.

AccessLine launches VoIP service
AccessLine Communications has unveiled a VoIP service for business users. SmartVoice Service includes free “on-net” calling between company locations via voice VPN, reducing costs for local and long-distance calls. The service features follow-me functionality, voice-mail and fax management, call screening, conference calling, and the ability to integrate remote workers into the service. SmartVoice Service will be available for either PBX replacement or as a simple line replacement to plug in to existing phone systems.
