Microsoft has set Jan. 27 as the official release date for SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services, the company said this week.
Originally, reporting services were to be part of Yukon, the code name for the next version of SQL Server due out in the second
half of 2004. Microsoft announced a change of plans in June and said it would deliver the reporting engine by the end of 2003
as an add-on to SQL Server 2000. That target date has slipped slightly.
Availability of SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services will now be announced on Jan. 27 in a webcast hosted by Paul Flessner,
the senior vice president of Microsoft's enterprise server division, and Bill Baker, general manager for business intelligence,
the Redmond, Washington-based software maker said in a statement Wednesday.
The reporting services add-on is a business intelligence tool that allows users to create customized reports using the SQL
Server database. The tool can pull information from a variety of data sources, including the SQL Server database, and generate,
distribute and manage reports based on that data, a Microsoft spokeswoman said.
SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services will be available at no charge to licensed SQL Server 2000 users. An enhanced version of
the reporting engine will be included with Yukon, the spokeswoman said.
