Computer Associates International announced four new and enhanced Unicenter network management products this week, including
one for wireless LAN management.
The announcements "better align products and blends the (management) information in the products," said Joe Scott, product
manager for Unicenter. The products build on Islandia, N.Y.-based CA's vision of managing on-demand computing, he said, giving
views of the network that both IT technicians and business managers can use.
The new wireless management product, Unicenter NSM Wireless Network Management Option 3.0, can help network managers identify
rogue access points in a Wi-Fi environment, then isolate them and cut them off, Scott said. Despite the Version 3.0 moniker,
the product is brand new and was developed in-house. Previously, CA resold third-party products.
"There's no competitor that covers the breadth of management that we have, especially with wireless," Scott said.
Kerry McCutchen, lead technologist at an Electronic Data Systems application facility in Miramar, Fla., uses a variety of
Unicenter management products from CA, including the NSM Wireless Network Management Option 3.0 integrated atop the Unicenter
Service Level Management Option. In all, the facility has about 50 users with about 10 servers. Users have a variety of Pocket
PC wireless devices and can receive color-coded updates about the entire network.
"We love it," McCutchen said of the Unicenter product. "We have overall management where we can drill down and check the status
(of the network) and get to it all through a PDA."
All four products are available now. The wireless option prices start at $2,100. Pricing starts at $3,900 for Unicenter NSM
Network Performance Option 3.5, at $3,800 for Unicenter Advanced Network Operations 3.5 and at $36,000 for Unicenter NetMaster
Network Management for TCP/IP 7.0.
Both the wireless and network performance options require Unicenter Network and Systems Management software.
