PeopleSoft embraces Linux

In a move that boosts its customers' OS options, PeopleSoft will announce on Tuesday that it is exploding its Linux support from one application to more than 170 applications running on the open-source OS. To help ease its shift toward the Linux community, PeopleSoft has tabbed IBM as its primary Linux technology partner.

To cement IBM's role in PeopleSoft's aggressive Linux push, the independent software vendor has selected IBM eServerxSeries, DB2 Universal Database, and WebSphere Application Server as its key Linux development and optimization platforms, said Rick Bergquist, CTO of Pleasanton, Calif.-based PeopleSoft.

"Linux is ready for primetime," said Bergquist. "We're partnering with IBM to tune Linux and to ensure it runs tip-top in implementations."

Bergquist said PeopleSoft will embrace Linux as a platform for its applications beginning in the fourth quarter of 2003. PeopleSoft product lines expected to be part of the first Linux salvo include AppConnect, Application Integration, CRM, ERP, Enterprise Service Automation, Financial Management Solutions, Human Capital Management, Human Resources Management, Supplier Relationship Management, and Supply Chain Management.

PeopleSoft Web Server deployed on Linux and optimized for IBM WebSphere Application Server is available now, according to PeopleSoft officials.
