Sakoman played a substantial role in the development of Palm OS 5, the most recent version of PalmSource's operating system for personal digital assistants (PDAs).

"Steve Sakoman has the respect of everyone at PalmSource. We are sorry he has decided to pursue new opportunities and we wish him good luck," PalmSource said in a statement.

He originally joined PalmSource parent Palm as part of a team that worked for Be, a company that developed software for handheld devices and Internet appliances. Palm purchased the intellectual property rights and assets of Be in August of 2001 for $11 million in Palm stock.

A number of former Apple employees have gone to work for Palm, including David Nagel, president and chief executive officer at PalmSource, based in Sunnyvale, Calif.

Sakoman's new title at Apple is vice president of software technology, reporting to senior vice president of software engineering Avie Tevanian, Tevanian said in a statement.

It has been a tough couple of weeks for Palm. The company fired 50 employees from its hardware unit last Thursday, and warned its third-quarter revenue will be less than previously expected on Monday.
