AMD offered few details about the new processor, which appears to offer a slight increase in the server processor's clock speed with no new architectural features. AMD's previous top-of-the-line server processor, the Athlon MP 2400+, was just released a little less than two months ago.

AMD is embarking on a quest to gain market share among corporations that mostly use rival Intel's processors or proprietary RISC (reduced instruction set computing) processors from companies such as Sun Microsystems or IBM. The forthcoming 64-bit Opteron chip based on its new Hammer architecture is expected to help the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company break into the market for one-way and two-way servers running either Linux or Microsoft's Windows.

The processor will be priced at $273 in quantities of 1,000 units.
