Dangerous security flaw likely just a hoax

A claim of a software vulnerability in a program used to connect securely to servers across the Internet is likely a hoax, according to an analyst with the SANS Internet Storm Center.

The program, called OpenSSH (Secure Shell), is installed on tens of millions of servers made by vendors such as Red Hat, Hewlett-Packard, Apple and IBM. It is used by administrators to make encrypted connections with other computers and do tasks such as remotely updating files. OpenSSH is the open-source version, and there are commercial versions of the program.

Windows 7 'family pack' pricing revealed

Microsoft will price a multi-license "family pack" for Windows 7 at $149.99, according to at least one online retailer that has posted pricing details prematurely.

Fadfusion.com, a Missouri-based online seller of computers, electronics and office supplies, lists something called "W7 Family Pack - Home Prem Upg" on its site for $138.99, an $11 discount from the $149.99 it claims is the package's suggested retail price.

Google lists HP, Acer among Chrome OS partners

Google is already working with several companies to develop devices around the new Chrome OS, including Hewlett-Packard and Acer, the company said in a blog post late Wednesday.

The list displays a vast regional spread among PC vendors, from the world's largest PC maker, HP, to China's biggest, Lenovo, and two of Taiwan's top vendors, Acer and Asustek Computer. Noticeably absent was Dell.

Yahoo boosts Web data joiner

Yahoo is enhancing on Wednesday its Web service API for querying and joining data across any Web source or service on the Web, with the addition of capabilities to write and modify data on Web services.

Specifically, the Yahoo Developer Network is offering a feature for the YQL (Yahoo Query Language) that extends the platform by adding "write" capabilities. YQL lets developers query and join data across a Web source or service on the Web.

Update: EMC wins bidding war for Data Domain

Storage vendor Data Domain has agreed to be acquired by EMC for US$33.50 per share, ending a bidding war that had pitted EMC against NetApp.

Data Domain said Wednesday it has signed a definitive merger agreement with EMC and terminated its previously announced merger deal with NetApp. Data Domain said it paid NetApp a $57 million termination fee under terms of that agreement.
