Once I received the two servers in this test, I inspected them visually for damage and then installed them on a mobile cart for access to the test equipment. I connected each server to power, to a Cisco 3500 switch with copper gigabit Ethernet interfaces, and to the KVM on the test rack.
I tested for basic functionality, performed basic management tasks, including such things as setting the IP address, domain information, and the like. I installed a basic set of Web page materials and tried each as a Web server. Performance tests used a WebAvalanche 2200 from Spirent Communications, which allowed us to simulate a high rate of Web traffic. With proper tweaking, each of these servers was asked to handle between 10 and 15 page transactions per second. I also tested file and print services and inspected and tested redundant features.
