I connected four servers with gigabit NICs (network interface cards) to the 6024’s copper ports. I then trunked a Cisco 2924XL-EN and two Dell PowerConnect 3300 series switches to the core via gigabit copper links. Throughput testing was conducted with netperf and netpipe on Linux, with file throughput tests run over FTP, HTTP, and NFS (network file system) protocols measured by custom perl scripts.
Performance testing included intra- and inter-VLAN throughput testing with and without ACL (access control list) and QoS configurations. During high-throughput tests, the hot-swappable power supplies were pulled and reseated without noticeable effects.
Configuring the 6024 was done primarily via CLI (command line interface), but also via the Web interface with Internet Explorer and Mozilla browsers. I installed Dell’s Network Manager on a dedicated server, and performed a discovery on the lab network.
